HHS secretary: Clearer nutrient labels coming soon



Choosing healthy food in the supermarket will be easier next year. The research found that people became obesity and they decided to make new front nutrient label to be easily find the healthy food said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. Sebelius says consumers could start seeing the new labels in the next six months. Putting the labels on the front of packages is a voluntary initiative by food makers and retailers.They will spend $50 million on education campaign in 2011 to raise consumer consciousness about these new labels. The Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Food Marketing Institute said.


From this news, in my opinion, I quite like that government will provide people education about these news labels, so people will be able to follow this new issue and in the future they can make right decisions on buying food because nowadays people became fatter and fatter . If they do not make these labels clearer many people will get suffer from disease such as heart disease and obesity.

Low-Calorie Foods May Be Just as Unhealthy




The Daily Mail conducted a recent study which has found that companies that make low-calorie foods usually cut down calorie by adding other unhealthy ingredients. For example Hellmann's Mayonnaise comes in three different brands Regular, Light and The Lightest. They found that whereas the lighter one have less fat content, they are add more sugar and salt to remain the good taste. Hellmann is lighter than Light brand has almost twice double salt than that original version, and three times more sugar. This is look like a ordinary trend. Another example is Philadelphia Light Soft Cream Cheese which has only half fat compare to the original cream cheese which has almost 30 percent more sugar."Light and similar terms are weasel words for when a product doesn’t match official terminology for a reduced fat or low fat food. Many people think they are low in calories but this is often not the case," Catherine Collins, the dietitian at St George's Hospital in London said. In addition another study has found that a fat-free diet cannot reduce the risk of heart disease, breast cancer or stroke, so people who want to be healthier should eat more fruit and vegetable according to The University of Maryland's Medical Center.


I do agree with this the researches, it hard to believe that those delicious and full of fat food have other versions that healthier but still have the same taste. I think we should avoid those low-fat daily foods because they only make you to consume it more.

Lots of people believe that low-fat food is good for their health. From this article there are several examples of low calories food and drink. To begin with, sandwiches seem like a healthy choice, buy they are not. They come with huge amounts of salt, fat and sugar. Supermarkets are now sale healthier versions, but these may not be very different, because it does not meet government rule for low-fat and it still contains 4g of saturated fat according to Collins (2010). Sandwiches can be a minefield when it comes to healthy eating. This is 300 kcal, where they can be up to 500 kcal, but it has triple the saturated fat content of a standard tuna sandwich and almost a third of your daily guideline salt, easily boosted to almost half your salt intake if you add a bag of crisps to the meal In addition, Healthy chips ­contain 22 g of fat per 100 g which totally makes them high in fat according to the Government’s rules. Walker’s baked cheese and onion crisps seem good for dieter. On their packages are saying 70 % less in fat in very noticeable sign but actually they are not low-fat, they have just a fewer calories than those regular ones, because the crisps contain more sugar to maintain a good taste. Those products are promoting themselves as a low-fat, light or healthy product, while they are still unhealthy.


I do agree with this article, from my own experiences, I was tried to reduce my weight by low-fat food but it does not work, so I gain more and more weight instead. Then I stopped eat only low-fat food and started to eat more fresh fruit and vegetable and do more exercise such as yoga, swimming ,and badminton. Finally I realize that low-fat food are not good as many people think they are just useless and unhealthy, but the right ways to keep healthy and reduce my weight is exercise and eat more vegetable.
